This event is to remember Richard Burns and to raise money
for his memorial fund and the RAF Benevolent Association. Richard was England's only World Rally Champion, winning the
title with Subaru in 2001. In 2005, aged just 34, he died from a brain tumour.
He was a popular figure and one of the PR events where he left an impression was at RAF Marham in Norfolk. Each year our good friends at
Kings Lynn and District Motor Club run the Richard Burns Memorial Rally jointly with the RAF at Marham and this year's event is on 13/14th August. The event will once
again be raising funds (likely to be a serious five figure sum) for the Richard Burns Foundation and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
For those who haven’t been before or who have and need reminding, the event is a 2 day, 8 stage, approx. 75 mile tarmac single venue rally,
likely to attract 130-plus competitors using some of the best tarmac stages in the UK. For those who have been before the format will be much the same but with a number of
detail changes to improve on the success of previous years and to bring some variety.
Members of Cambridge Car Club will once again be running the arrival and start controls on both days and assisting with stage set up and
changes. We will also be sending a team the previous day to help KL&DMC set up the stages.
One of the key differences between this event and others is the great social atmosphere with camping available on site (adjacent to the service
area) on the Friday and Saturday nights. There will be a barbeque, bar, party on Saturday night, fireworks and fly pasts scheduled by Tornado, Spitfires, Hurricane, Dakota and
possibly others. CCC will in its usual style be making maximum benefit of the social side of the event as well as providing an
efficient and effective marshalling team.
As if all the above isn’t enough for you to want to come to this fantastic event, it has just been confirmed that Mini WRC will be taking part,
probably with both drivers, Kris Meeke (shown on right at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July) and Dani Sordo. They will be using the event as a final shakedown before Rally Germany the following weekend. Apparently Marham’s
tarmac is very similar to what they will encounter in Germany… smooth and good quality.
You can also see examples of in car footage on www.youtube.com - just search for RBMR - and some video clips of the view from the start on our CCC In Action page.
